You lose belly fat the same way you lose fat anywhere: a calorie deficit you can hold for months, enough protein and sleep to keep your muscle, and enough patience to let a slow process finish. No exercise strips fat from your stomach specifically, and no mamak dish needs banning. Portion size and drink choice do most of the work.
That last part is where advice written elsewhere falls apart here. It assumes you cook every meal and buy your groceries once a week. If dinner arrives at a plastic table at 9pm and lunch is nasi kandar with three gravies, you need numbers that match your actual life.
Which kind of belly fat should worry you?
Two kinds sit around your middle. Subcutaneous fat is the soft layer you can pinch. Visceral fat packs around your liver and intestines, and it carries the real health cost. The WHO links excess abdominal fat to type 2 diabetes and heart disease. A tape measure tells you more here than the bathroom scale does.
The scale lies to men in both directions. You can hold a normal BMI and still carry a heavy visceral load, which is common enough across Asian populations that health bodies use lower waist thresholds for us. The NHS flags increased health risk for men above a 94cm waist and high risk above 102cm. For men of Asian descent, guidance sets those numbers lower, closer to 90cm, because the metabolic risk shows up at a smaller waist.
Measuring it takes ten seconds. Stand up, put a soft tape around your bare waist at navel height, breathe out normally and do not suck in. Read the number, write it in your phone, repeat on the first of every month. Four measurements over four months tell you more than four hundred trips to the scale.

Can you keep eating at the mamak?
Yes. The mamak is not the problem; the default order is. Fried carbohydrates, sweetened drinks and a second roti “because it is only RM2” stack up fast. Swap the drink and drop one fried item and you cut a few hundred calories a day without giving up the table, the football or the company.
Rough numbers, because stalls vary and nobody weighs your gravy:
| Order | Rough calorie range | Cheaper swap |
|---|---|---|
| Roti canai kosong | 250 to 350 | Keep it, just have one |
| Roti telur bawang | 350 to 450 | Roti kosong |
| Roti tisu | 700 to 900 | Not a snack. Split it |
| Teh tarik | 120 to 180 | Teh o kosong, near zero |
| Mee goreng mamak | 600 to 800 | Mee sup or soup-based |
| Nasi lemak bungkus | 400 to 650 | Skip the fried chicken |
| Nasi kandar, chicken and three gravies | 800 to 1,200 | One gravy, plain rice, add sayur |
| Chicken rice, SG hawker | 550 to 700 | Steamed over roasted, skin off |
| Maggi goreng | 500 to 700 | Tosai with dhal |
Treat those as ranges, not facts about your specific plate. The pattern matters more than the arithmetic: gravy, frying oil and sugar carry the calories, and none of the three fill you up.
Two words save you more than any app. “Kosong” gets your tea without condensed milk. “Kurang manis” gets it with less sugar when kosong is a step too far. Drinks are the easiest win in the region because a teh tarik costs you a snack’s worth of calories and leaves you exactly as hungry.
Add volume where it is cheap. A plate of sayur or a side of dhal fills space that a second roti would have taken, and dhal brings protein with it. Ikan bakar, sup ayam, tosai and plain rice with one curry all belong on a normal week.
Timing gets blamed more than it deserves. Eating at 11pm does not convert food into belly fat by some special mechanism, and the fasting window you saw on TikTok is a tool for eating less, not a metabolic trick. What late supper does is add a whole meal to a day that was already complete. If your mamak run is social rather than hungry, order the drink and skip the plate. Nobody at the table will notice.
Does any exercise burn fat off your stomach?
No. Spot reduction has failed every time researchers have tested it, so crunches will not thin the layer above your abs. Exercise still earns its place: resistance training protects the muscle you would otherwise lose in a deficit, and walking adds meaningful daily energy expenditure without leaving you starving afterwards.
Two or three resistance sessions a week is the useful dose. If you have never trained properly, our gym for beginners guide has the starting programme, and the ab workout guide covers the core work that builds the muscle worth revealing later. The rest of the fitness section fills in the gaps.
Walking is the part men skip because it feels too easy to count. In KL and Singapore the heat makes it a logistics problem rather than a fitness one. Solutions that hold up: walk before 8am, use the covered walkways, take MRT or LRT stairs instead of escalators, park at the far end of the mall carpark, and put the weekend session somewhere shaded like MacRitchie or Bukit Kiara. Aircon mall laps count too, and half of PJ already does them.

How fast should it come off?
Slowly. The NHS suggests losing 0.5kg to 1kg a week, which sounds unimpressive until you multiply it out: 10kg in three to five months. Faster loss costs you muscle, rebounds when the plan ends, and does nothing for the habits that put the weight on in the first place.
This is the part where the internet sells you something. Ignore the detox teas, the fat burner capsules on Shopee, the 800-calorie meal plans, and the coach promising your abs by Raya. Very low calorie diets exist as a medical tool with supervision attached, not as a thing you order online. MedlinePlus and Mayo Clinic both land in the same unglamorous place: steady changes to what you eat and how much you move.
One more honest caveat. Belly fat tends to go late for men. You will see your face and arms change first while the waistband stays stubborn for weeks. That is normal, and it is the exact point where most men quit.
What else moves the needle?
Four things beyond food and training. Sleep, because short sleep may raise appetite and make late-night ordering harder to resist. Alcohol, which adds calories and lowers your resistance to supper. Protein at every meal. Fibre from vegetables and dhal, which fills you for very little.
Protein is the one worth planning. Eggs, chicken without the skin, fish, tofu, tempeh, dhal and Greek yoghurt all sit within a normal budget here. Getting a decent serving into each meal keeps you fuller between meals and protects muscle while you are eating less.
Stress deserves a line too. A rough quarter at work sends most people towards familiar food at odd hours. You cannot delete the stress, but you can decide in advance what your 11pm order is, which removes the decision at the moment you are worst at making it.
Alcohol is worth its own honest accounting if you drink. Beer in KL and Singapore is expensive enough that most men treat it as a weekend thing, and the calories in the glass are only half the story. The other half is the supper afterwards, which is where a Friday quietly erases a careful Monday to Thursday. Two drinks instead of five changes the whole night, including the part after it.
When should you see a doctor?
See a GP if your waist sits above those thresholds, if diabetes or heart disease runs in your family, if your weight changed sharply without you trying, or if you take medication that affects appetite or weight. A basic screen covers fasting glucose, HbA1c, blood pressure and a lipid panel.
Access is not the barrier people assume. A klinik kesihatan visit in Malaysia costs a token amount, Singapore polyclinics run subsidised screening, and most company health plans on both sides cover an annual panel. If you have a diagnosed condition, take a diet plan to your doctor before you start it, not after.
Nothing here replaces that conversation. It gets you to it with better information.
Tonight, before you order, measure your waist and put the number in your notes app with the date. Then order the teh o kosong. Measure again on the first of next month and let the tape settle the argument.
Quick answers
How long does it take to lose belly fat?
Months, not weeks. The NHS suggests aiming for 0.5kg to 1kg a week, so a man carrying 10kg of excess weight is looking at three to five months of steady effort. Belly fat often goes late for men, after the loss shows in your face and arms first.
Do sit-ups or ab workouts burn belly fat?
No. Core training strengthens the muscle under the fat but burns too few calories to change the layer on top, and you cannot choose where your body takes fat from. Keep training your core for strength, then create the calorie deficit that makes it visible.
Can I still eat at the mamak while losing weight?
Yes, and pretending otherwise is why most plans collapse by week three. The drinks and the fried sides carry most of the damage. Order teh o kosong instead of teh tarik, take roti kosong over roti telur bawang, and add a plate of vegetables where you can.
Is belly fat more dangerous than fat elsewhere?
The visceral fat packed around your organs carries more health risk than the soft layer you can pinch. The WHO links excess abdominal fat to type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Waist measurement tracks it better than weight, so measure your waist monthly.
