Is Sinners the better night in?

For most people, yes. Sinners is the rare awards winner that plays like a Friday-night film: a Southern vampire picture with real blood in its veins, and Michael B. Jordan doing double duty in the role that finally won him the Oscar. And Hamnet?

Hamnet is the homework that turns out to be the meal. Jessie Buckley’s Best Actress win is the kind critics call towering, and for once the word fits. It is a grief story built around Shakespeare’s family, which sounds like medicine and plays like a gut punch. Save it for a night you’re prepared to feel something, not background viewing while you fold laundry.

What about the rest of the field?

The craft categories tell you which films reward a good TV and which forgive a laptop. One Battle After Another’s six-award haul included technical wins, which is the Academy saying the film is an experience as much as a story. Did the Academy get it right this year?

The performance holds up regardless of the discourse.
